well ive been in London for around 12 years now
means i left Albania when i was 6 years old
to go to school then you would have to be around 5-6 years old
thus i never attended an Albanian school
fortunately for me my grandmother would teach me how to read and write from a young age and when we moved here they sent books to me like the good old Abetare (sa fort te dua me ato shkronjat e tua haha )lol !!

although ive spent 3/4 of my life in a foreign country i am proud to say that i know how to read and write Albanian fluently (maybe a mistake here and there) lol

in my opinion.. i want my children to be able not only to speak and understand but also to write and read Albanian and i will make them learn if its the last thing i do!!!

what opinions do you guys have?
is it ok for our children just to speak and understand but not read and write?

:D

its unacceptable for your children to simply learn the language, u must teach them to read and write, they have to know to read and write so well that they are going to open their own universities in kosova and shqiperia to teach albanians

yeh thats gonna have to be the case lol
i just posted a comment in another thread ill post here too...

the sad thing is ... you just have to turn on your satelite tv (DigitAlb) n tune into the News and hear something like this...

News speaker : "...tensionet midis dy LEADERAT arriti kulmin bla bla..." (just made that up)
but u get the picture
this is the NATION'S NEWS!!!
and they seem to have forgotten the word udheheqes..
now its not just this.. its words like :
Shopping .. ??? iku fjala pazar...
show.. ?? iku fjala shfaqe

lol
i dont want my child to be one of those children saying one albanian word for every 5 english words lol
(even thought i do it myself at times)
but not when he/she is talking to others and i most definately dont want my child not to be able to communicate with my family and lose contact with the albanian culture!

if they grow up in an environment where they have to speak another language.. the parents have to put in the effort to get them speaking it..
personally the thing that has helped me most is the Albanian satelite channels
when we first got it a few years ago i reeeeeally could not understand what they were saying on the news
they were talking to fast
since then ive come a long way.. but its not liek i did not know how to talk in the first place im saying that learning two languages is overwhelming for young children..
my little cousin in America would only speak Albanian at home.. since she has started pre-school n all that my uncle says she only speaks english

Definitely, I taught other children that came through my house learn and speak Albanian, not mine if I have any. Plus children are like sponges they learn languages quickly, but the only thing that is important just keep them continue, because they can forget it as quick if not practiced.

Kids don't forget languages easily. I never had a problem with remembering languages, but i have a good memory. My kids will speak Albanian, ose do hajn dru.

(God forbid i don't get hit by a truck or something and don't get the chance to have kids)

That is because in your family you speak your language, but if parents change the way that they communicate in the house children do forget the language.

I have a few children that come from different albanian household. While some can't talk the albanian even though their parents speak albanian at home, or parents try to speak english with children so the child won't have difficulties in school, which is further from teh truth, casue the child does better the more languges they speak.

Another one speaks fluent Albanian, greek, English and he is taking spanish as well in school. He was only 3 years old when he came over here, and was born in Greece. This kid learned Albanian when he stayed at my household for a while. The funny part was that he was talking in the lapce dialect...:D

thats the bad part, when they are born in greece, they might identify as greek and not albanian, ti e din qfar muta jan grekt edhe qysh i assimilojn shqiptaret

Nahhh, he knows he's albanian. You can't help it where you are born as long as your parents teach the child with the good values of their identity.

I think it's necessary to learn how to read and write in albanian. When children use the language only orally they would probably be able to speak simple albanian, but if they wanted to express something more complex they would have to use the foreign language, their vocabulary in this language would be richer because they have attended local schools in that language.

my cousin lives in Greece and is 4months younger than me.. we've been in different countries for roughly the same time yet although she can speak and understand she cannot read or write and although like i said she can speak... she always asks "cfare do me thene ajo.. bla bla " lol

but yeh..the problem is that so many people have lost it.. howww are they gonna pass it to their children
and with all the mixing of dialects and ways fo speaking... its going to be more difficult..
i have a friend who is from Tirana.. he hangs around alot with guys from Shkodra... Tropoja.. Dibra.. basically north Albanians.. and he is soooo hard to understand when he speaks Shqip ! lol

I know it is sometimes very difficult to understand people from other areas, but you must also consider that we have something like the literary language which is used on TV and most of the albanians can speak in a way. I think parents outside should learn their children their own dialect as good as they can and if they aren't able to understand an northern albanian (like me, hehe) for example it's not worse, you see even native albanians can't understand every dialect (eveywhere it's the same).

PS: Dialects are also a treasure for our language so they shouldn't be regarded as barrier to learn our mother tongue.

Actually thats the best time to teach somone a lot of languages. when you are around the age of 3-7 or somthing like that. your mind grasps the languages a lot easier. scientifically proven.

What do you mean 2 languages is over whelming? I knew two languages by the time i was 5-6 (greek albanian), and i understood italian but couldn't speak it...and by the time i reached 12 i learned english too.

Languages don't overwhelm you unless you don't practice them.

My bro for example had to learn english right when he started speaking his first words in albanian, and then he started stuttering...so the doctor suggested we teach him one language for the time being....but thats the only time they can be over whelmed really

so you still know those languages?
cos the same thing happened to me
i knew Italian at a young age.. came here to the UK and now i can barely understand it
i mean that children loose interest and switch easily to antoher language so for example he/she wil prefer to speak only english.. and it goes downhill from then...

As I said to another post if you do not practice a language you tend to forget it, not all of it though.

The same thing happened to me, I spoke Italian fluently when I went to Greece. There I started speaking Greek, and I came to USA and started speaking English. I can understand Italian perfectly, but very hard to speak it. If I go to Italy and stay there for 2 months it can come back to me.

Yup my kids will definitly speak albanian for sure, actually that will be the first language they will learn from me
and i am gonna try my best to teach them how to read and write it aswell!!easier said than done.no matter how hard you try albanian will always come second.they may learn to speak it properly but not good enough at writing it.there will always be something there which wil give the child away as someone born outside albania. this may not be the case with some families and their children but majority can suffer. the only time our children get to speak or practise albanian is while on holiday back home with family and friends, even these times are limited but it helps if it happens on regular basis.children born abroad of parents who do not speak the country's language tend to naturally teach and make better progress than those parents who speak e.g english . my son's interest in abetare is zilch in spite of our encouraging efforts in persuading him about the importance , etc.It gets worse if you have siblings as they always chat in the language the are taught at school. the impact of the long school hours and limited time with parents as well as lack of communication or deviation because of modern gadgets makes it vey challenging and frustrating at the same time. I initally spoke only english to my kid , later i knew i was mistaken and subsequently instead of dy my son says du, uli for ylli and so on. I rely now on visits to albania to make up for lost time.
